2050: Vermonters Take a Swipe at the Future
Collected by Bill Mares, editedby Jane Smith, and illustrated by Don Hooper.
“As this marvelousbook makes clear…that sense of underlying community will bring usthrough.” —Bill McKibben, author and climate activist
Thirty-seven Vermonters—fromstudents and octogenarians, businesspeople and academics, to poets andjournalists—take a half-serious, half-humorous approach to imagining life inVermont in twenty-five years. The compilation begins on a serious note by novelistStephen Kiernan on the many challenges facing the state now, then moves on to amixture of humor, fantasy, and concern by prominent individuals such as VermontPublic meteorologist Mark Breen, Alchemist Brewery cofounder and CEO JenKimmich, and other notable contributors such as Steve Conant, Christy Mitchell,Melinda Moulton, bluesman Bob Stannard, retired editor Jim Welch, and BillSchubart. What they all share is a deep love of Vermont.
“Bill Mares expressly did notwant a collection of essays that would be buffeted by politics, wars, ordisasters of the day: he preferred to raise questions that inspired discussionabout the bigger picture,” his widow Christine Hadsel said. “He would haveloved to see so many opinions in print.” Bill was also the co-founder of theHouse of Fermentology, and the co-author of Making Beer with ToddHaire.
At least half a dozen, and probably more, contributors will read their shortessays at Deep City on Wednesday, December 10, from 5:00 - 7:00pm. They will behappy to sign books, which can be bought at the site or purchased from PhoenixBooks on Church Street.
